Marks of the Ancestors: Handtap Tattooing of the Philippines

Come join the Tagalikha workshop this November and hear from Jonny!

In this online workshop, you will be learning about the pre-colonial handtap tattooing practice of the Philippines and its importance as an indigenous cultural practice of our islands. We will also be exploring ways to begin the journey of rediscovery to our roots and how it plays into potentially receiving your own markings one day.

Jonny is a Bay Area raised Filipino based currently in Vegas pursuing his apprenticeship as a cultural hand tap tattoo practitioner with Manong Lane Wilcken through Katao: School of Living Traditions. He graduated from San Francisco State University in 2020 with a B.A. in Cinema and a Minor in Asian American Studies. Besides tattooing, Jonny also pursues writing in the form of poetry or spoken word while combining 35 mm film photography to tell stories. Lately, he’s been recreating the bead work jewelry of his tribe, the Itneg-Tingguuian. His interests and work surround ideas of Filipino/a/x identities, indigenous rights, pre-colonial traditions, and cultural practices.

Keep connected with Jonny at @jonny.speaks and @katao.school.
